TCL RayNeo Air 2 Review: The Augmented Reality Future

Highlights

  • While the TCL RayNeo Air 2 glasses may appear as ordinary sunglasses from the outside, there’s much more beneath the surface.
  • The MicroOLED screens featured in the TCL RayNeo Air 2 deliver exceptional visuals when aligned correctly.

Recently, TCL introduced its Rayneo Air 2 AR glasses, and I’ve dedicated numerous hours to thoroughly test them, aiming to determine whether this advanced technology is poised for widespread adoption in the mass market.

These AR glasses represent a recent addition to the tech landscape, featuring state-of-the-art displays and compact form factors that offer portability. It’s worth noting that the term “AR” used for these glasses can be somewhat misleading, as the hardware primarily enables the projection of a display equivalent to several hundred inches directly in front of the wearer’s eyes.

While I’ve explored various glasses from TCL and other manufacturers in the past, the Rayneo Air 2 was the first one I personally put to the test. This experience provided valuable insights into the potential future of this technology.

TCL RayNeo Air 2 Design

While the TCL RayNeo Air 2 glasses may appear as ordinary sunglasses from the outside, there’s much more beneath the surface. The frame features a slightly thicker top to accommodate a bright, Sony-produced MicroOLED 1080p panel that reflects through a glass piece. Consequently, these glasses sit a bit lower on the head than one might anticipate.

Additional controls are present on each stem, including a volume rocker on the left and a brightness rocker on the right. The left stem also houses a USB-C port, where the device searches for a DisplayPort (USB-C alt mode) signal and powers itself.

Both stems are adjustable, allowing for a better fit for both the screens and the user’s head, complemented by an adjustable nose stem for a versatile fit on various face shapes. While you can add prescription lenses, contacting TCL directly is necessary for fitting.

The overall design presents a sleek and compact aesthetic, and after trying it out, it may take some adjustment. Weighing in at only 76g, it feels akin to a slightly heavier pair of glasses. Once worn and adjusted to sit perfectly on the head, it transforms into a visually captivating experience.

TCL RayNeo Air 2 Features

The MicroOLED screens featured in the TCL RayNeo Air 2 deliver exceptional visuals when aligned correctly. These screens are anticipated to find their way into the Apple Vision Pro. Connecting the glasses to my Android tablet using the provided USB-C cable allowed seamless streaming of the Dune: Part Two trailer directly into my view. The overall visual experience, including black levels and content appearance, was impressive.

The glasses operated smoothly at a refreshing 120Hz, making navigation through Windows and MacOS via my Ayaneo Air 1S and MacBook Air effortless. Even for lower-end games like Vampire Survivors, the glasses provided a seamlessly smooth gaming experience.

The black levels were notably impressive, and the glasses maintain a sense of presence in any room of use. This is particularly advantageous for those who often find virtual reality experiences to be restrictive and antisocial, as observed during my reviews of the PSVR 2 and Meta Quest 3.
