Crunchyroll Announces New Season for Black Butler at Anime Expo 2023

Exciting news emerged at Anime Expo 2023, as fans of the popular dark fantasy series, Black Butler, were delighted to learn about the upcoming season set to air in 2024. This highly anticipated return marks nearly a decade since the conclusion of the previous season, Black Butler: Book of Circus, which wrapped up in September 2014. The series initially debuted in 2008 with its first season, followed by Black Butler II in 2010. Additionally, two anime films have graced the screen over the past decade.

Black Butler is an adaptation of Yana Toboso’s ongoing manga series of the same name. The manga serialization began on September 16, 2006, in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine and has since amassed 32 tankobon volumes. Overseas, the English-translated version of the manga is licensed for publication by Yen Press, expanding its reach to a broader international audience. With its captivating story and dedicated fanbase, the announcement of a new season has generated significant excitement and anticipation among Black Butler enthusiasts.

During this year’s Anime Expo 2023, Crunchyroll’s anime panel made an exciting announcement regarding the highly anticipated return of the Black Butler anime. Produced by Aniplex, a new season is in the works, as revealed by a teaser trailer and a captivating visual poster released by Crunchyroll.

The creators clarified that the upcoming season will not be a remake but will instead feature fresh content adapted from the manga. Fans can expect this new installment to arrive in 2024, and it will be available for streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll, just like the previous seasons.


The voice cast for the new season has been confirmed, with Sakamoto Maaya reprising her role as Ciel Phantomhive and Daisuke Ono returning as Sebastian Michaelis. These talented actors previously voiced these beloved characters in the earlier seasons. Additionally, the announcement unveiled key staff and crew members, many of whom have worked on previous Black Butler seasons, ensuring a seamless continuation of the series.

The new season is being produced by the animation studio CloverWorks, under the direction of Kenjirō Okada. Hiroyuki Yoshino, known for his work on Book of Circus, is in charge of series composition for this upcoming season. Yumi Shimizu, who previously served as an episode animation director and key animator for the 2008 Black Butler anime, will now take on the role of character designer. The music for the series will be composed by Ryo Kawasaki, adding to the immersive experience of the show.
