What If…? Season 2: What We Know So Far

Back in 2021, it seemed like Marvel was constantly releasing new shows. From the mega-hit that was WandaVision to Loki (which will return for a second season in 2023) and everything else, 2018 was a tremendous year for Marvel on Disney+. What If…? is an animated series that recounts tales from parallel realities about our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes in various ‘what if?’ circumstances, all overseen by someone known as “The Watcher.”

The series included several fantastic concepts, such as Peggy Carter receiving the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, or T’Challa being taken into space instead of Peter Quill. Of course, the program was renewed for a second season and will continue to transport us to numerous worlds and realities for us to enjoy.

But when does What If… happen? Season two? How long will we have to wait for it to be released? Who will be returning? If you have questions just like we do, here is what we know so far about the upcoming second season of What If…?

What Is The WHAT IF…? Season 2 Premiere Date?

Unfortunately, there is no confirmed release date for What If…? as of this writing, in May 2023. Season 2. There are several possible explanations for this.

This year hasn’t been a very good one for Marvel television. While there’ve been some movies, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (and its great reviews), the Marvel series have been pretty few and far between since last year. The only shows that we know are debuting in 2023 are Secret Invasion, Echo, and the second season of Loki.

The animated series was originally scheduled to premiere in “early 2023,” as revealed during the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con (via Variety). The presentation even gave us a preview of the types of stories we may expect in Season 2.

However, we are definitely past early 2023 at this time, since it was verified on its Disney+ website in March 2023 that the title was “Coming Soon” rather than “Early 2023” as it used to be (via ComicBook). This does not bode well, and it leads me to believe that we will have to wait until 2024 for the new season to premiere. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long – although I doubt it’ll be on any TV release schedule in 2023.

Cate Blanchett And Laurence Fishburne Are Joining The Voice Cast

We’re not sure who will be returning to voice their characters in the future season, but we can reveal that there will be some new cast members who will be hopping on for their own separate roles. The director of What If…? confirmed during the LightBox Expo (via Laughing Place) that Cate Blanchett will appear in Season 2 to voice the animated version of Hela, Thor’s sister in Thor: Ragnarok.

Laurence Fishburne has also been confirmed for Season 2. Fishburne announced his return to voice Bill Foster, or Giant-Man, in What If…? Season 2 in an interview with Brandon Pope TV, which was broadcast on Twitter while promoting John Wick 4. This would be the actor’s first return to the role since Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Again, we have no idea who from the original cast might return. This might include Paul Rudd, Benedict Cumberbatch, and others, but as nothing has been verified, all we can do is wait for more information soon.

The Second Season will Feature Several New Stories

As indicated above, the peek at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022 gave us a glimpse at what Season 2 may be about – or, at the very least, the first few episodes. Several new plots were described in the teaser displayed during the event.

Characters from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will face off against Odin and the Asgardians in a racing episode, Valkyra and Iron Man in a time-travel episode, and more.

These already seem like insane tales, which makes sense given that it’s Season 2 and there’s so much more to discover. Andrews told Deadline in 2022 about what we may expect in the second season:

The First Episode Will Be “What If Captain Carter Fought The Hydra Stomper?”

Get ready to be ecstatic, since we now know the title of the first episode. It was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 (via Slash Film) that the premiere will be called “What If Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?”

The Hydra Stomper was featured in three episodes of What If….? and was controlled by Steve Rogers in this parallel reality as a method for him to join the fight against HYDRA. Based on the title, I’m wondering if Steve has turned into a villain, therefore I’m excited to see what this first episode has in store for me.

Season 3 Is Already In Development

Last bit of news, but be excited: Season 3 is already in the works. Also stated at Comic-Con in 2022 (via Variety), the third installment has been ordered and is in the works.

It would be ideal if we could obtain Season 2 first, but at the very least, this gets me more interested for the future.

While we don’t know when What If…? will return to our television screens, we can at least grin and hope that Season 2 isn’t too far away. He’s hoping for more updates soon, because I can’t get enough of these fresh stories.
