History of Fort in Red Dead Series
In 1898, Teddy Brown’s gang takes over Fort Mercer and uses it as their primary hideout while committing crimes in New Austin. In the mission “Kill Them, Each and Every One,” the protagonist’s posse, along with several U.S. Marshals, besiege the fort and wipe out the gang. The Del Lobo Gang later takes over the fort and can be cleared by the player.
In 1907, the fort is occupied by a large force of Del Lobos. Also John Marston can choose to attack it. However, the fort’s defenses, including two stationary Gatling guns positioned at the south end, make it potentially dangerous to attack. But, the player can flank these defenses by attacking through the open gate to the south.
Fort Mercer is a critical location in the New Austin chapter of the game as it serves as the stronghold of Bill Williamson and his gang. The first mission, “Exodus in America,” ends at the fort’s gates, and the remainder of the chapter builds up to the eventual storming of Fort Mercer in the mission “The Assault on Fort Mercer.” After the mission, the fort becomes a gang hideout occupied by the Banditos.
Events of Undead Nightmare in Fort Mercer RDR2
During the Undead Nightmare, Fort Mercer becomes a permanent Safe Zone and cannot be overrun by zombies. However, it is possible for undead to spawn inside if survivors seeking refuge are killed. The fort is now occupied by the U.S. Army, who are using it to shelter refugees and wait for rescue. But, there is always a large horde of zombies surrounding the fort, making it challenging to enter or leave.
In Fort Mercer, Marston meets Nigel West Dickens. Who is initially trying to sell a modified version of his elixir to the refugees taking shelter inside. This location is also one of two places (the other being El Presidio) where the player can begin the Missing Persons activity.
Fort Mercer includes a safehouse for the player to save their game, change outfits, and fast travel to other locations. However, it is only available after completing the mission “Love in the Time of Plague” and cannot be accessed legitimately until after completing “Curious Tales from Blackwater,” which grants the player access to New Austin.
Besides the stack of boxes near the main gate, there are also two ladders on the eastern face of the fort, and two more on the southwest and northwest corners that can be used for ingress and egress.
Multiplayer in Fort Mercer RDR2
Fort Mercer is a location in Free Roam that is taken over by the Bollard Twins Gang. In this hideout, the player can find the LeMat Revolver. Which is placed in a crate on the roof of one of the rear buildings. Also a Gatling Gun on the roof of the fort. To complete this hideout, the player must defeat all the gang members and their boss. Among the gang members defending the fort are Gus Ballard, who can appear multiple times. Also Slink Bradshaw, who is known for his excellent marksmanship. The completion of this hideout earns the player XP and is necessary for several Multiplayer Challenges under the Free Roam category.
Fort Mercer also offers several multiplayer game modes. Including Gang Shootout, Gold Rush, Grab the Bag, Shootout, Stronghold, and Cooperative Mission. These modes are only available through DLCs. With Gang Shootout, Gold Rush, Grab the Bag, and Shootout requiring Legends and Killers DLC, Stronghold requiring Liars and Cheats DLC, and Cooperative Mission requiring Outlaws to the End DLC.
