Only a few days remain till the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake, and Capcom has created a sweet anime short starring Leon Kennedy to commemorate the return of a game that’s up to its knees in blood and parasites. This Resident Evil adventure, titled “Leon and the Mystery Village,” is the first of several shorts developed by Japanese anime studio Nippon Animation. You probably don’t want your kids to see it, despite the cute art and intro.
The first episode of Resident Evil 4 anime skit concludes with the unfortunate government agent blocking an axe with his head after coming upon a tiny hamlet full of murderous locals while much younger and armed. It’s horrifying but cute. Additionally, it visually appears to have drawn inspiration from the 1974 anime series Heidi, and you’ll have a tough time getting the theme song out of your head, ever.
This isn’t the first time Capcom has had fun with its Resident Evil franchise; just before Resident Evil Village’s release, the firm commissioned a number of spooky puppet performances to help market the title.
The PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S releases of the Resident Evil 4 remake have all received largely positive reviews as of this writing. Kurt Indovina characterized the remake as “a re-envisioning of its past rather than a copy of it” in a review. Preserving Resident Evil 4’s status as a genre-defining experience and one of the best games ever, while also raising the standard for what constitutes a solid remake.
