Amazon Games and Embracer Group’s Middle-earth Enterprises have joined forces to develop and publish a brand-new MMORPG centered around The Lord of the Rings. The project, led by Amazon Games Orange County, the team behind the highly successful MMORPG New World, is in its early stages of development.
CEO Lee Guinchard of Freemode, a division of Middle-earth Enterprises, emphasized their dedication to crafting an MMO that fully captures the vastness of the Middle-earth universe. Set in Middle-earth, the game will incorporate captivating narratives from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings novels.
The upcoming MMO will be available globally on PC and consoles, although the specific consoles have yet to be confirmed by Amazon Games. Rich Lawrence, director of the Amazon Games Orange County studio, expressed a commitment to reflecting the cherished values and enjoyment derived from the books. Lawrence assured fans that the MMO will be meticulously tailored to the essence of The Lord of the Rings.
While this is not the first Lord of the Rings MMO—The Lord of the Rings Online has been running since 2007—previous attempts by Amazon Games to bring Middle-earth to life were halted in 2019 and 2021 due to complications arising from the acquisition of Leyou by Tencent. Now, with the success of New World, Amazon Games is poised to take another shot at realizing a Lord of the Rings MMO.
No specific release date has been announced yet, as Amazon Games currently has multiple projects in development, including the highly anticipated next Tomb Raider game. Despite this, fans of the franchise eagerly anticipate the authentic portrayal of The Lord of the Rings in the game and hope for a smoother launch compared to past endeavors.
