According to a recent leak by Twitter user billbil-kun, the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise could be named “Mortal Kombat 1.” Billbil-kun has accurately revealed game-related information in the past, such as monthly game lineups on PlayStation Plus.
There is already confirmation that a new Mortal Kombat game is coming. During a February 2023 earnings call, a Warner Bros. executive referred to “Mortal Kombat 12” while discussing the company’s lineup for the year. Additionally, developer NeatherRealm Studios has been releasing a series of short videos that appear to tease the next game.
The teasers include a grain of sand in an exploding hourglass and a clock ticking up from 10 to 11 before skipping over 12 and exploding into sand at 1. Billbil-kun’s theory that the series may be skipping over “Mortal Kombat 12” in favor of “Mortal Kombat 1” aligns with what the teasers seem to be hinting at.
The end of Mortal Kombat 11 hinted at a complete reboot of the series, with protagonist Liu Kang gaining the ability to rewrite time and history. Billbil-kun also suggests that the game will be released on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
It is important to note that this is still a leak and should be taken with caution. NetherRealm will likely announce its next Mortal Kombat project soon.
