Overwatch 2 PvE Hero Mode is Cancelled After Long Delay

Overwatch 2’s planned PvE Hero Mode campaign has been canceled, according to game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss. The mode, which was originally meant to be a major feature of Overwatch 2, offering an alternative to competitive multiplayer with a narrative-driven campaign, will no longer be developed. Instead, the ideas initially intended for the Hero Mode will be incorporated into new PvE Story Missions, which will be launched in Season 6. The exact details of these missions and how they will adapt to the PvE gameplay are still unknown.

Keller and Neuss explained that these changes were necessary to ensure the longevity of the game and accommodate it’s evolving roadmap and player base. They emphasized that game development is an ongoing process and that a significant portion of the development team had been focused on the PvE side of Overwatch 2 since its announcement at BlizzCon 2019. This shift in resources led to a halt in content updates for the live version of Overwatch, and the team realized that this approach was not sustainable.

To better utilize their resources, the team decided to prioritize the live game and focus their PvE efforts on a new story arc that will be introduced in Season 6. This strategic shift meant that they could no longer continue developing a dedicated PvE mode separately. Instead, the studio will concentrate on launching the upcoming Story Missions, which will provide PvE content to players.

More information about the new mode will be revealed around August when Overwatch 2 Season 6 is expected to be released.
