CD Projekt Red’s new Witcher game, Project Sirius, is undergoing a significant overhaul. According to reports, the game had been evaluated and found to lack both the scope and commercial potential of the original concept. As a result, CD Projekt Red took an “impairment allowance” of nearly $10 million. The company’s statement suggests that it is working on “formulating a new framework for this project.”
Game Over Thirty’s video game business reporter suggests that this move by CD Projekt Red could mean that the existing version of Project Sirius will be scrapped altogether. The game was originally announced in October 2022 as an innovative take on The Witcher series aimed at both veterans and newcomers. More than 60 people were reportedly working on it during pre-production in October 2022.
The Molasses Flood, the Boston-based studio known for developing the survival game, The Flame in the Flood, was tasked with creating Project Sirius, one of several Witcher games announced by CD Projekt Red in October 2022. Alongside this project, the studio unveiled a new trilogy of Witcher games, a third-party Witcher game titled Canis Majoris, a sequel to the hit game Cyberpunk 2077, and a new IP currently being developed under the codename Hadar. With such an impressive lineup, CD Projekt Red is gearing up for a busy few years ahead as they continue to dominate the gaming industry.
