From Comic to Console: ‘The Last Ronin’ to Become Dark and Gritty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Video Game

Nostalgia Strike ??? Get ready to step into the shadows with the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game adaptation. Based on the particularly grim graphic novel ‘The Last Ronin’, the upcoming third-person action role-playing game (ARPG) promises to be a single-player adventure akin to the acclaimed ‘God of War’ series.

The game will follow Michelangelo, the last surviving Ninja Turtle in a distant future where he attempts to avenge the death of his brothers and mentor Master Splinter at the hands of the Foot Clan. Paramount Global’s senior vice president for games and emerging media, Doug Rosen, has confirmed the game is still a few years away from launching but has already generated a buzz among fans of the franchise.

The Last Ronin is one of the darker Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories, as Michelangelo is haunted by hallucinations of his deceased siblings while attempting to murder the Oroku bloodline. Rosen shared that although other characters could still be playable in flashback sequences, the main action would stick to Michelangelo in the game’s present.

Looking ahead, Rosen teased that more information about The Last Ronin and other TMNT games would be shared in the next few months and years. It’s a good time to be a TMNT fan, with the likes of The Cowabunga Collection and Shredder’s Revenge launching in 2022. Since its release last June, Shredder’s Revenge has been hugely successful for developer Tribute Games, selling a million copies in just one week after launch.
