A new, very different sort of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is in the works, an adaptation of the gloomy, dystopian scenario presented in the 2020 graphic book The Last Ronin.
According to Doug Rosen, executive vice president for games and new media at Paramount Global, the rights holders for TMNT Ronin. The video game version of The Last Ronin will be darker. More adults take on the traditionally colorful Ninja Turtles, much like the comic. Last week, in an interview with Polygon. Rosen compared the planned third-person action role-playing game to Sony’s previous God of War games. And promised that it will be faithful to the tale of The Last Ronin arc.
The focus of The Last Ronin will be on a single character. As opposed to the usual four turtles in past TMNT games like last year’s Shredder’s Revenge. (and occasionally their friends Splinter, April O’Neil, and Casey Jones). Like with the comics. Rosen said that additional characters could be playable in flashback sequences. Although the focus is stated to be on the lone surviving turtle.
When the announcement of The Last Ronin comic series was made. The identity of the lone surviving Ninja Turtle was somewhat of a mystery. The plot of this arc centered on a mysterious black-masked Ninja Turtle who wielded nunchaku. Sai, bo staff, and twin katanas. The identity of the only remaining turtle, Michelangelo. Was not revealed until the very last pages of the first issue of The Last Ronin. Mike is out for revenge in a war-torn New York City. Where the Foot Clan has slaughtered the last turtles and Master Splinter.
In 2020, IDW debuted a five-issue miniseries titled The Last Ronin. Kevin Eastman wrote the arc, which was inspired by a concept he and TMNT co-creator Peter Laird had in the late ’80s.
The game, like the comic book series The Last Ronin, is aimed toward an older demographic. As is the recent addition of Shredder to Activision’s Call of Duty shooting genre. Rosen said Paramount can take “different approaches [to the property], and not dial back to make the game something it shouldn’t be” by creating TMNT games for both younger and older audiences.
Rosen has said that the release date for the video game version of The Last Ronin is still “a few years off.” The game is now under development at an unidentified firm. Rosen claims they’ve found the appropriate studio to convert. The Last Ronin into an ambitious AAA video game, much like the teams behind the vintage beat-em-up Shredder’s Revenge and the Cowabunga Collection.
In addition to new TMNT video game content, Rosen promised more information about The Last Ronin in the near future. The upcoming animated feature film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Mutant Mayhem will be accompanied by the release of a corresponding Roblox game featuring the heroes in a half-shell. Developer Gamefam is also responsible for Sonic the Hedgehog’s last Roblox adventure, Sonic Speed Simulator.
